ABOUT THE ARTIST

Linda Edwards

Born in Stockport, Linda Edwards has lived and worked in Saddleworth for over 30 years and now resides in the village of Uppermill.

Her passion for art began at an early age and was shaped by the influence of the great masters, Constable, Rembrandt, Breughel, Salvador Dali and Salford born artist L.S. Lowry.

‘It was wonderful to see the contrast of each artist’s work. To study them and see how the artist brought the canvas alive with colour and light was truly exhilarating and has impacted my artistic journey’

Her work varies from local Saddleworth landscapes and traditions to commissioned portraits and abstract work.

I never want to limit myself. Art needs to be creative and evolve from within. Creativity is about being free. I see myself as a visual storyteller capturing a moment in time’

Working primarily in oils, Linda's practice encompasses a wide and varied subject matter, from the landscapes and traditions of Saddleworth to commissioned portraits and abstract works. Her paintings are rooted in observation and experience, often reflecting a deep sense of place and atmosphere.
Linda has exhibited widely both nationally and internationally. Her work has been shown at The Royal Cambrian Academy in Conwy, The Truman Brewery in London, Manchester Art Gallery and HOME Exhibition Centre Manchester, where she was a nominated artist, as well as the Harrogate Event Centre. Internationally, she has exhibited on prominent art platforms including Art Basel Miami, La Biennale di Venezia, Palma, New York and Zurich.

Originals paintings are for sale and giclée prints are also available.

THE BEAUTY OF SADDLEWORTH

street life

Moorgate Street, Uppermill, Saddleworth

2022

61 x 51cm

Oil on canvas

On a hushed December evening in Uppermill, Moorgate Street rests in quiet anticipation. There is no bustle, no crowds — only the gentle promise of the season ahead. Festive lights shimmer delicately along the street, their warm glow the sole whisper of Christmas drawing near.

Street lamps stretch long, intricate shadows from the winter-bare trees, their branches etched softly against the pavement. Above, the moon drifts behind passing clouds, illuminating them in silver tones and casting a tranquil luminosity over the scene. The sky becomes part of the composition — expansive, reflective, almost theatrical in its stillness.

Amid this timeless atmosphere, the blue recycling bins stand quietly at the kerbside — subtle markers of contemporary life. They anchor the painting firmly in the present day, a gentle reminder that even in moments of beauty and nostalgia, we remain part of our own time.

This work captures not only a place, but a pause — that fleeting stillness before celebration begins.

Kevin Sinfield

2021

16 x 22 ins

Oil on canvas

Painting not available for sale

I was inspired to paint Leeds Rhino’s rugby legend Kevin Sinfield’s portrait from his wonderful act of kindness towards his teammate Rob Burrows who has motor neurone disease.

In December 2020 he ran 7 marathons in 7 days to raise £77,777 and awareness of Motor Neurone Disease.

He raised over £3 million!

Although I couldn’t compete with Kevin’s running capability, I was able to equate his efforts in brush strokes and donated 4 limited edition signed prints by Kevin for auction to generate cash for the MNDA.

A beautiful African sunset with a mixture of vibrant colour and light in the evening sky reflected in the water. The sun can just be seen edging downwards through the canopy of trees.

Morris Man

What better sight & sounds of summer in Saddleworth than the dancing and singing of the local Morris men. Sitting relaxed aloft the rushcart with locally sourced spring flowers in his hat, this painting depicts Saddleworth’s main tradition in all its glory. His hat weighed down with flowers, each brush stroke helping to tell a story. The vibrancy of colour against the blue sky made my heart lift. Whilst painting him, I found myself looking forward to sunnier days ahead with optimism. Not many Morris men wear the trademark striped waistcoat. The distinctive red, white and blue pattern is synonymous with Saddleworth as are the hats of fresh flowers.

The dance must be performed correctly to earn the waistcoat. On only a few occasions has a man been told he has to dance again! Long may our local springtime traditions continue and flourish, interwoven in the fabric of our society.

THE CHURCH INN UPPERMILL

Here is a painting of the iconic St Chad's Church and Church Inn pub in an early evening in winter. The colours of the canopy a vibrant contrast to the midnight blue sky and Church in the background. They sit well together forming a magnificent duo at the head of a green and wooded steep valley looking down on the lovely village of Uppermill.
